The first day of class I remember we were asked to write down what feminism means to us and I remember I had no a clue what to write. Throughout the semester we were continually asked what feminism means and were asked to write things on the board that came to mind when we heard the word, and of course all the stereotypically words were what came to my mind. I believe that I grew a little bit more every day in this class and I know have my own definition of what feminism is and it is the work women do to influence the issues concerning all women in hopes that it will create a better future for all the women of the world in all generations. Every day in this class I was able to build on my definition and make it a word that really means something to me. Though I really do like the quote by Cheris Kramerae from The F-Word which is “Feminism is the radical notion that women are human beings.” I was able to come up with my definition from all the course readings, the history of feminism and all the in class discussions. This class really opened up my mind, as I am sure it opened up many others, to the knowledge of all the struggles women went through in the past to get us to the place we are today as women.
The history of feminism is basically broken down into three different waves. The first wave which occurred between 1790 and 1920 was headed by Elizabeth Cady Stanton. The movie Iron Jawed Angles which we watched in class really helped me understand what exactly women had to go through to get us the right to vote. Those women were put under so much ridicule and oppression but they continued to fight of what they believed in and were able to get us that right. The second wave took place between 1950 and 980 this wave addressed the social divisions among women based on race and gender. The second wave was the wave that gave feminism its negative reputation. This wave was directed at giving women equality in the workforce and in politics. The third wave began in 1980 and is still continuing today has not really as much progress as the other two waves. Many people would argue that women in the third wave do not care about women’s rights and that they are just taking the rights that the past waves gave them for granted. I think though personally that women in the third wave are still practicing the rights that the past women got for us through going and still voting. Also in this wave was had two ladies make history by being the first woman to run for President and Vice President. This just shows that women in our wave are still trying to make progress not only in our third wave but they are continuing the rights that were given to us in the second wave. Through this wave many articles have been written in response to what most people think about this wave such as Lisa Belkin’s book called The Opt-Out Revolution and many other numerous articles that are still trying to define the word feminism. Everyone in this wave has a different opinion of what the word really means, and I think that is ok because I do not think there is just one set definition.
This class I think was connected to feminism in numerous ways. Every day we had a new topic that made me think a little differently about what feminism really is every time. Some of the topics that really intersected with what feminism is were the topics of work, politics and activism. The topic of work I found to be really interesting because for me my major is going to take more than the normal four years to get. Being a pharmacy major it will take around seven years for me to get my doctorate in pharmacy. Before this class I did not know that women were not paid as much as men for the exact same job. This issue is something that I find should be taken care of as soon as it can. Also before this class I did not realize how much I would be giving up to purse my career. Though pharmacy once you get your degree you get paid very well and you only have to work about three days a week, getting to that point is going to be very time consuming. I just always thought that it’s just seven years that will not be any time at all but after this class I realized how much I really am giving up such as; being able to start a family when most people my age will be and then being able to find a husband and get married at a decent time in my life. I am actually very scared and nervous now that I will not have time for all the things I want to do in my life, even thought I am just nineteen and I should not be worried yet about this stuff this class has really made me start thinking even more about my future.
This class has also put into perspective something really big that I got to be a part of this year. This election was the first election I have had the opportunity to vote in and when I went to vote in November I honestly just thought “ok I went to vote no big deal” and I continued to think that until I got into this class. Then on the third day of class we watch the movie Iron Jawed Angles and honestly I got chill bumps from this movie because I finally realized that something I thought of as not a big deal was a huge deal. I had never really thought about what the women in the first wave had to go through to give me the right to vote. After we finished the movie I was saddened as to how foolish I was to not think that voting was a big deal. I am very glad that we were able to watch this movie because it really changed my perspective of the privileges that I have today as a women. It also made me very aware of what all the women in the first wave had to go through to get the women today to the point that we are. I am very thankful for the women like Elizabeth Cady Stanton who was not afraid to stand up for what she believed in for women for all generations. I think the third wave could get a lot more accomplished if we had women like Elizabeth Cady Stanton. There are many things that women in the third wave can get accomplished if we just had to motivation and will power that Elizabeth had.
This class has also changed the way that I think about women in politics. Before this class I had not really thought about what all women in politics go through to get where they are today but this class has really changed my mind set about that. In the book The F-Word in chapter ten, which is titled Women in Political Power, the chapter talks about what all women have to go through and how hard it is for them to get the positions that they want to get. Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner used a statistic in the chapter that states “according to the Center for American Women and Politics Rutgers, as of January 2003, less than 2 percent of the 11,699 people who have ever served in the House or Senate have been women.” I find this just insane and if it had not been for this class I would have never really thought anything of it. This year has been the most influential presidential election in quite some time and it was a huge progression for the women in our country. Even though throughout the campaigning and early voting I really did not take into account what these women that were running for office were sacrificing. One day in class we discussed what all Sarah Plain had to give up to run for Vice-President and that day really made me think about that she was having to leave her kids and not getting to spend time with her family. I had realized that she was a woman and that her being picked was a huge deal but I have never really thought about what was going on behind the scenes with her and her family. From another discussion we had in class over this topic was how the media put Sarah Plain as a mother down and said that she was not a good mother because she left her family when they never said anything about Barack O’bama not being there for his two daughters. One quote I really liked from The F-Word in chapter ten was said by State Representative Cathy McMorris “one of the country commissioners in my district said, it will be a cold day in hell if that woman becomes a state legislator. After I won, my dad said, well I guess you are going to have to go buy him a coat.” I thought that this quote summed up what women are becoming in our nation due to women in the third wave that are not afraid to stand up for what they believe in.
Another way that this class has tied into feminism is before this class I never knew about the three waves much less knew that I was a part of a wave. I really thought that chapter six from The F-Word really helped me understand want I am really a part of. Chapter six is titled Signs of Times: Defining the Third Wave and it talks about all the issues that the third wave has to deal with. I really liked how Rowe-Finkbeiner described the third wave as any group of women can be a part of this wave and that there is no “party line”. I do agree on her though that third wave has to deal with more sexuality issues than the other two waves had to deal with. After this class I have now realized that I am a part of something that has the potential to be a huge wave.
Before taking this class I did not have the slightest idea as to what a feminist was and what their purpose was. From just after one semester of a Women’s Studies class I can honestly say that I am a lot more educated on this subject than I ever have been before. Though I am still very unsure on some of the issues that feminists are trying to accomplish and even though I do not agree on some of the issues I can say that I am becoming more of a feminist. I will say though that I am a very strong Christian and that some of the issues that we discussed in class I did not agree with at all and I thought were a little inappropriate. The majority though of the topics I did agree with and would love to see the outcome of if they ever do get fixed. This class has taught me a lot about all these topics and it has also taught me a lot of life lessons; like no everyone is just like me, everyone has their own opinion and that we should all respect what everyone has to say because at the end of the day we are all people and we all have feelings. I would have to say though that yes I am far more knowledgeable on the topic on feminism than I was the first day of class. I can also say that because of this class I now view things a lot differently than I did before and it has all changed for the better. It has just taken a total of four months for me see a wide variety of topics differently than I had before and because of that I would say yes I am a feminist.

This semester in Women’s Studies the class has discussed many topics that affect women. The topics we have discussed range in a wide variety from body image, politics, health, balancing, to the main topic of defining feminism and many more. The readings that have had the biggest impact on me this semester and the ones that I could best relate to were; The Opt -Out Revolution, Reviving Ophelia and the chapters four, five and six from The F-Word. Each of these readings are connected because they all have to do with either how the media shapes who we become and what we become shapes how we are when we get out on our own with college and then a job.
The article The Opt-Out Revolution by Lisa Belkin had a huge impact on me and how I view women that work and then the ones that stay at home. I honestly did not care for this article because I do not think this really shows how women are in the workplace. Belkin really put down my generation saying that we are becoming the women in the 1950’s, which is not at all true. I am here at OU to become a pharmacist and have had no thoughts of every giving up my job to stay at home. Though I do some day want a family I don’t think that I will have to give up my career to purse what I want. Belkin’s thesis in her article was that women are opting out to have kids and to get an easier life which is very much not true. Many news reports and journalist have showed Belkin’s thesis to be false. This essay fits into the topic that we talked about in class with the gender work roles. We had many discussions over why we thought more women are opting out and also what are some circumstances that are causing them too. We came up with a lot of conclusions and the one I thought fits best is that women have the choice to opt and stay at home. I think that a woman having the choice is good because that gives her some more power to do as she chooses.
The next reading that has greatly had an impact on me this semester was Reviving Ophelia by Mary Pipher. Reviving Ophelia is a book that really focuses on the true life of adolescent girls. Mary Pipher’s main point of her book is that girls’ attitudes and negative body image is the result of family, peers and the media. Pipher also has put together a video that we watched one day in class. This video is really what sold me over on Pipher’s idea that media really does shape how girls see themselves. She uses advertisements to show what little girls really see before they should even began to think about body image. She also tells about what kind of message these pictures are sending out to girls that if you aren’t skinny then you are not “beautiful”. When in all reality these women in the advertisements are stick thin and most have eating disorders. Pipher also uses statistics to show that teenage girls really do think more into advertisements then most people think. When the teenage girls see these ads the only thing valued to them is their sexuality. I really enjoyed reading Pipher’s article; I found it really interesting and very true of the society that we live in today. This article really fit in to the topics that we covered in class about body image and the effects that media plays. Also this article has now changed to way I view advertisements and television shows.
The third reading that I enjoyed and had an impact on me this semester was chapter four in The F-Word. This chapter impacted me because its main focus was college women and that’s what I am. The main point in this chapter was to find the reasons why women’s opinions are still not being heard today. The author of the F-Word Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner tries throughout this chapter to find the reasons why college women are kept so silent. She provides the reader with ideas throughout the chapter such as priority issues, gender equality, self identity and balance. She proves her points throughout the chapter by giving statistics from Harvard, Duke and the U.S. Bureau. Something that I found really strong about her findings was the interviews she conducted with college women. I found the interviews more interesting and they made the topic more real to me because it was something that people my age had said so I could relate more. This chapter really hit home to me because throughout college I have been trying to find balance in my life with school, family, friends and then have time for me. My favorite quote from this chapter was said by Hallie Flanagan “youth lives in an atmosphere of energy waiting to make contact”. The reason I liked this quote so much was because I do believe that while in college we have so much energy and want to do some many things but making our grades and getting into the schools we want is what is holding us all back. I believe our contact will come when we get out into the real world having our own families.
The next reading that has impacted me was chapter five in The F-Word. This chapter’s main focus was the women in the third wave and if there is even a third wave. This reading fell into the topic that we have been covering all semester and it’s the topic that the whole class is about and that’s the different waves and what they have accomplished. Rowe-Finkbeiner states in this chapter that “the first wave won the right to vote; the second wave won the right to enter the professional workforce and the third wave combines previous efforts”. She also provides information about how a lot of women think that the third wave does not even exist. I think that all these women are wrong because even though there have not been huge changes like the first and second wave gave us I do think that because of those two waves we are at the point we are today. I also think that we are building on to what they have created for us by going out to vote and moving up in the corporate ladder. Even though these may be gradual changes I do think the third wave is making progress. To prove my point Sarah Plain she was a women running for Vice-President and also Hilary Clinton was running for President if you cannot call that progress then I don’t know what progress is. Even though neither of these women made the position they were running for it gave some hope to many women in the United States. Also I think that if people really think that there is no third wave then maybe it’s because women today have lots of questions for the women of the first and second waves and these women should be willing to help us out and give is some advice.

This reading falls into the topic we discussed in class about the pay between men and women. The main reason that this chapter had an impact on me was because I am at a major university getting a higher education and also in a few years I will be out in the work force. Throughout this chapter Rowe-Finkbeiner used statistics from the SAT test that prove that girls are surpassing boys in test scores. Rowe-Finkbeiner states that “three-fifths of all high school National Honor Society members are girls and that girls outnumbered boys 124 to 100 in advance placement courses.” I really think that this is true because in my high school I was in the National Honor Society and the majority of the members were girls. She also states that “in America women now make up 47 percent of the paid labor force, with women aged twenty-five to thirty-four”. Rowe-Finkbeiner does also state that “these numbers give a false hope the women have won the war”. I do agree with her on that point because I do feel like women are making huge progress but there is still a lot of progress to be made. One area is in the workforce with the way women are paid compared to men. I think that it is just insane that men get paid more money for the exact same job. Though it may seem like we have made a lot of progress, the equality between women in race is nowhere close to being equal. Rowe-Finkbeiner states in this chapter that” in 2002 of the 32 percent of women that graduated college, 39 percent were white women, 18 percent was African-Americans and 10 percent was Hispanics”. This is nowhere close to being equal and the third wave of women should change that.
Each of these five readings are connected to each other in that they all have to do with how the media and society effect what kind of person women become. I believe that it all begins with the media and that why I chose Reviving Ophelia. Then women begin to move out on their own and the first step is college so that is why I chose chapter four of The F-Word. After college comes the workforce and that is why I picked Opting Out and chapter six from The F-Word. Finally all these readings tie into the big picture which is the all the different waves and the current wave that we are in now and that is why I chose chapter six of The F-Word. I think that these readings where the best choices for my theme because it is kind of the time line of a women’s life and each of these books depict all the facts that shape us along the way.
Since reading these articles I am now more aware of what is happening around me and what some of the factors were that shaped who I am today and what I will become in the future. One question I do have is why have Americans let the advertisements become so provocative and why hasn’t anyone done anything about them? It does not take a rocket scientist to tell that the way women are portrayed in them is wrong so why have so many people let it go by unnoticed? Another question is why in the world are women stilled paid less than men for working the exact same job? I honestly think that this should be the third waves biggest challenge is getting that changed. This is impacting all women not just a select few and this is going to greatly affect me here in a few years when I am out on my own working. I think that we should all get together and get that changed because who does not want more money or women will never be equal to men until that gets changed.

Blog Number Ten
The topic that is important to me is equal pay for equal work. I think that it is ridiculous that men make more money than women for the same amount of work. One group I found was the AAUW Action Network group, they urge the Senate to continue the fight against wage discrimination by acting swifly on the Paycheck Fairness Act. The AAUW's Mission is advancing equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, and research. I like their approach because they are to the point they do not try many different things to get things changed they go straight to the higher up (Senate) to get things done. They are a group and women that are fighting hard to get the wage discrimination changed and have already made huge advances in the fight. It is groups like this that are going to make the changes possible. This group has also helped in the fight and got the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act into law. Though it is sad that the main person that started this act will not get to see the changes it is going to make. Changes have to start somewhere and it is groups like this one that will make it happen! In the future I may join a group that is seeking the equal pay for equal work and fight the same fight many women are today.

I found the tenth chapter in the F-Word very interesting about voting. This past election was my first time to get to vote and I was really exciting about it but then after realizing how the election process really works i was a little discouraged. It did not seem like to me that my vote really did count. When I started reading this chapter i soon realized that it really does count. Just as in the book when it talks about what if women did not vote, then there would be 19 million less votes and that is a lot! I was also surprised to see the percentages of women state legislators in some of the different states though it is still not 50% it is getting a lot closer with 36.7% in Washington. Just like our discussion in class on Monday I agree that the media did down play Plain making her seem like a bad mom for not being at home with her children. Reading Gender: The Eternal Feminine
Honeymoon Scene
The Scene Honeymoon from Act I in The Eternal Feminine, by Castellanos, is about the night of the honeymoon and what the man thinks he is suppose to do. This act is shown in a funny comical way but has a serious point that women are seen as objects and the man is suppose to take all these things away from her. Castellanos was showing by this that yes vows should be taken seriously because it is a promise to your significant other and also to God, but in many situations the man usually takes this to extremes and thinks that they are now in full control of the women. When in all reality it is an equal obedience between the both of them. She was also showing that women are not "suppose" to like sex and that it is bad for them too. That is why Lupita told Juan that he was going to have to force her into having it again because she did not like it that much. This also shows that women do not get to think for themselves and that what the man thinks is usually how things go.

Blog Number Nine
The non-governmental organization I chose was the Women's Learning Partnership for Rights, Development and Peace. This organization works on the issue of women's rights and is headed by women.
About Them:
Women's Learning Partnership's sole purpose is women's leadership and empowerment. WLP builds networks and works with 18 autonomous and independent organizations in the Global South, mainly working with Muslim societies, helping them transform their families, communities and societies. They believe that women working in the partnership will benefit greatly from the skills that they teach them. Their main goal is to increase the number of women taking on leadership and decision making roles in the family and community. They hope to improve the effectiveness of feminist movements in Muslim societies.
What do they do:
With their partners they create leadership training curriculum and empowerment programs for women in 18 countries. They build organizational capacity and to support the collective mobilization of women in the Global South for gender equality and social justice. They also build a culture of peace in order to protect women's rights. They also engage in campaigns and hold South to South and North to South dialogues on the challenges facing women in the Global South. The WLP also ensures that gender equality remains on the agenda of the policymakers and society leaders.
This organization is worth contributing to because they support women and help them become something in their societies. They also fight hard for keeping women equal in all aspects in life. This is why everyone should contribute to this organization.
This a gender issue because is involves empowering women and making them equal in every aspect in life.
Response to Readings:
In Enloes article. Enloe believed that globalization was a bad thing and that it is not helping the people that need jobs. Enloe also believes that the government is the cause of all this globalization. I also thought that they story you read in class about Princess Diana and how she showed globalization very well I thought that that was very interesting. I also liked in class how we did the activity with clothes and showed where we all got our items from. That really put in perspective that we are in a country that is very globalized. I had never really noticed where all my clothes were from until we did that activity. I do think that the governments of countries do need to get a handle on the working conditions that some people are working in. Some of these places are awful and need to be fixed very soon. They also need to look at the wages that these people are getting paid, its really not fair how much work people do then to get paid pretty much nothing. Also I do not believe that children should be allowed to work in these types on conditions. They should be kids while they can be.

Ethnography Paper
This is my Ethnography paper.
Ethnography: Pharmacy
For my ethnography paper I did my research on a female pharmacist. The central question I wanted to find out for this paper was if the field of pharmacy allowed women to have a balance with home and work. The reason I asked this particular question was because this is what I am majoring in and I wanted to just see firsthand if this job allowed women to have a balance in their lives. I also picked this question because I found the days we discussed this in class to be the most interesting to me. This is one topic that we have talked about that will affect me in the future. The different type questions I would need to ask her would be along the lines of how many days do you work a week, what time to you start working and get home from work. The investigations I would need to make would be to go and sit in one day and watch her work.
After thinking about my central question of if the pharmacy field allowed women to have a balance between home and work, I began to think about the different ways I will gather the information to answer my question. The ways I thought of were to go in to the hospital and watch her work from a whole day then I came up with a few questions to ask her about her job as a pharmacists. The questions I asked her were:
1.How many days a week do you work? Dr. Stowers answer was 3 days a week
2.How many hours a week to do you work? Her answer was 24 hours a week
3.Is it hard to be a full time pharmacist and be a mom? No, because I actually work less than a lot of people and still make more money than a lot of people.
4.How old were you when you got out of college and started your career? 26 years old when I got out of pharmacy school and then a few years later I had my daughter.
5.Is the pharmacy field good with letting you off for maturity leave? Yes, I got off as long as I wanted. That’s the good thing with pharmacy you can take off a year to be a mom and there is always a place for you when you get back.
During the time I was observing Dr. Stowers I got there when she did at 9:00 a.m. and she immediately began working. Her day consisted of following doctors and filling prescriptions and keeping the place in order. Since she is a full time pharmacist with her doctorate she has full control over the pharmacy in the local hospital. She was also able to answer phone calls from her family throughout the day and then at the end of the day she was able to get off and go pick up her kids from school. Dr. Stowers also only worked Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, to me this was a huge way she was able to spend more time with her family.
In my case of my research I found the question I asked to be true, she was able to have a balance between her work and her home and family. Things that could be missing from my research were that I only did my research over one pharmacist to where if I really wanted to test out this question I could research more pharmacists and see if there is a consistent balance in their lives. Anthropologists and sociologist could get more information about this issue by researching more pharmacists and ask more in depth questions. They could also observe them for more days then I was able to.

Blog Number Eight
When I googled Belkin's essay I found that women either agreed or disagreed with her. I think that is how most women are though they are either for or against women opting out. The women that were for Belkin's essay were mostly all women that did opt out of working. The ones that were against her were the women that were still working or were bitter that they could not do the same. The experiences in my life are that my mom is a kindergarten teacher so there has never really been a problem were with her working or having three children. Since my mom only had six weeks of maturity leave, she had to find some where for us to stay. When my sister was born since she was the first my mom was very apprehensive about leaving her with people she did not really know so for the first year my grandma kept her. When she had me at six weeks she took me to this lady that kept a lot of teachers kids. I went to her the first day and stayed with her from when I was six weeks old to when I was five and going to kindergarten. Even though my mom still had job I do no think that effected how me and siblings were raised. I do not really see a problem with women working and having kids.

Blog Number Seven
I haven't watch many movies lately I never have time to sit down and watch one. The movie though that popped into my head was Legally Blonde. This movie shows the ultimate stereotype for blonde headed girls. The movie I remember was advertised with commercials all the time. It was advertised as a ditzy blonde becoming something big. This movie the main character Elle Woods lived in a sorority house and almost all the girls in the house had blonde hair. Elle wanted to go to law school to show her ex boyfriend that she could be a lawyer. In the end Elle ended up being the best lawyer and graduated from Harvard with a job in place and her ex boyfriend didn't have any job offers. The significance was that the movie showed how most people view blonde headed girls but in the end it showed that they too can be something great. I think that this portrayal is what made the movie so popular and such a big hit.

Response to Readings:
The F-Word chapter 7 was about relationships and how the majority of women in today's time either don't get married or it ends in divorce. I think that the reason this is so high is that marriage isn't taken seriously anymore people don't stick to their voes. I find that very sad that it means nothing to a lot of people. I also think that a lot of it has to do with people not waiting until marriage to have sex. In today's society sex is something that is thrown around and people just do it because they feel like it. I grew up in a home where my parents taught me that you have to wait until marriage to have sex and they it should be a very special thing and its something that shouldn't be taken lightly. I was brought up in church so that is what I have always believed. In chapter 8 of the F-Word it talked about motherhood and how women are losing their balance with being a mother and work. I think that this has to do with all the teen pregnancies that we have in this country. Which then again has to do with people not waiting until marriage to have sex. I don't think we would have near the problem we have today if people would just learn to wait!!!

Blog Number Six
This advertisement I have chosen is the perfume ad with Britney Spears. In the ad I noticed that for one she has her finger in the belt loop which shows that she wants to take her clothes off or that she is teasing the men. I also saw all the birds in the ad in cages and at first I didn't understand why there were birds in the ad. The more I got to thinking the more I thought of the birds as men. That they are all in cages looking at Britney and that because of the perfume she is wearing she has the ability to chose which one she wants to let out. Also the bird on her finger to me shows that she has the man wrapped around her finger. This ad makes women think that if they buy this perfume that they too will have men lined up to be with them. The way Britney is dressed makes women feel that if they dress and look like Britney that this fantasy life will come true. The gender relations I saw in this advertisement was that once women dress and wear certain things that they have all control over men.
Reading Response
I agree with what Wolfe said, I do think that the way women show themselves off has change dramatically over the decades. One of my favorite shows of all times is the show Happy Days which is set in the 1950s. If you take that show and compare it to Desperate house wives you can see a huge change. I do think that there is a huge problem with the media in today's time period. All they ever show are skinny women with barely any clothes on. This not only effects college girls but also little girls too. I mean for instance Vanessa Huggins who played in High School Musical that got caught taken porno pictures, so many little girls watched that movie and then to have to main star get in trouble for doing things like that, that just doesn't send a good message. Over the summer I babysat a little girl whose favorite show was Zoey 101 starting Jamie Lynn Spears, but one day I came in a she told me her mom said she wasn't allowed to watch it anymore because Jamie was 16 and got pregent. This was a little girl that wanted to be just like Jamie. In today's society things like that are ok in the media but its not sending a good message to the little girls that look up to them. I do think that the media needs to get a handle on this because if they don't is it only going to get worse. Women need to be happy with who they are and they need to stop having the media tell them what can make them happy. We are never going to get any where in this 3rd wave if you don't accept and be happy with all varieties of women we have in our country and world.

Blog Number Five
This is my playlist!
These songs represent gender to me, they show the variety of all the different types of ways women can be. These songs are represent all types of music genre. I majority are from country which is my favorite type of music. I my choices in songs haven't changed much over the years I have always been a huge country fan and i am still am. I did pick some songs though that are older and I have always been a fan of older songs. I do not think that all women have to be the same, I think there are many ways that a woman can be a woman. As for me I grew up in a small country town and I showed pigs in FFA and my dad raises goats so for me country songs are my way of life.
My response to the readings is that I do think that our parents have a lot to do with the people we become or in my case that is true. I have always looked up to my parents and I do believe what they believe. With boys I think that having a strong dad as a role model is something I do think shapes them into more of a gentlemen. I really liked the activities we did in class this week. I do think media plays some what of a role in how we view groups of people and how people become. I also think though that our families and experiences play a even bigger role. In my life I wouldn't be the person I am today if it was not for my parents. Blog Number Four
I am a freshman so I am still thinking about what I want to do here in a few years. I am pretty set right on Pharmacy. I think that Pharmacy is a really good job for women to have it give you time to work and be a mom. Pharmacy is also very high in demand right now so that makes it even better. Looking at the course in Women's Studies that OU offers i have found some very interesting that I would maybe take in the future like:
Body image vs. reality, Internship, Motherhood in Contemporary Society... those are just a few.
If I do end up doing pharmacy then gender would play not huge role but some what of a role because it is a really good job for women to have. Men and women are pharmacists so I'm not sure that gender would really make a difference.
I haven't ever had a real job, I have babysat a lot for some people in my home town. I think that babysitting is mainly a girl job. Parents seem to trust their children with girls better than with boys. I think that when it comes to kids that girls are more responsible.
My history with gender is that everyone should be equal no matter what!!!

Reading through chapter four of the F-Word I found that the issues that the college women brought up with the survey are the same issues girls today are still facing. I would say that like the survey I think that gender equality is still one of the biggest along with self identity. Self identity is a big one with college girls, I mean college is all about finding out who you really are. Also having a balance in your life is another important social issue. I know that I'm just a freshman so the hard part of college and life hasn't really started yet, but even I have a hard time creating balance in my life. I am a huge perfectionist when it comes to school and grades so to me having good grades is more important then going out on the weekends. I know I should probably find a balance to make time for me.
I still havent been able to find the book FIFE.

Blog Number Three
Iron Jawed Angels I thought was an extraordinary movie. I have never seen it and I really enjoyed watching it. What shocked me the most though was that what was happening in the movie really did happen in real life. I have always known that women weren't always equal but this movie really put in perspective what it was really like.
I learned how hard it was for women to even get someone to listen to them talk. Like in the movie when they were handing out the flyer's and the woman couldn't get one person to even stop and take one. To me that would have been really hard to deal with because now we have the right to talk and make ourselves known and they couldn't even get one person to listen. The theme I found in the movie was to never give up. If the women like Alice Paul would have gave up then who would have fought for our rights. I very thankful that women like her didn't give up and that they continued to fight for our rights even getting rejected many times. The tensions I found were between the national women vs. the women like Alice Paul. The were very different in many ways from money and where and how they were brought up all these played a factor in the tensions that were between the two groups of ladies.
The ladies worked out these problems but just getting over it and working them out. Alice Paul was finally able to reach her goals by one not giving up and two by the note passing. They were able to make their voice heard with the Wall Street Journal for a voice to the public.
For the readings I have not been able to find the book Feminism is for Everyone. I am still looking I just have not been able to locate one yet.
I learned how hard it was for women to even get someone to listen to them talk. Like in the movie when they were handing out the flyer's and the woman couldn't get one person to even stop and take one. To me that would have been really hard to deal with because now we have the right to talk and make ourselves known and they couldn't even get one person to listen. Blog Number Two
For this next blog I interviewed my mom. She is my biggest role model and someone I really look up to. My mom is 47 years old, a mom of three and a kindergarten teacher. When I interviewed her I asked her what were some of her experiences with gender, she told me that being a kindergarten teacher most of the people she works with were women so she was never really in a position to be compared to a man. She has had both a female and male principal and she said that she really could not tell a difference as to whom was better. She said that they were both very understanding that she was also a mom and not just a teacher. My moms responds to what is feminism was that women were to be equal to men in all areas of life. She said that one event that made her conscious of her gender was having kids. She said that did not know how hard the job would be with being a mom and having a job. She said the hardest part was keeping everything balanced.
My response to the readings was the women have changed a lot over time. The teenage girls today live in a whole new world compared to their moms. We have a lot more to deal with such as size and peer pressure. Our moms did not have near the pressure to be thin as we do. In chapter three of the F-Word, when Gurley Brown interviewed some women about sexuality, I don't agree with what they are saying about showing your sexuality is good. I do believe a woman should dress like a woman but in today's society girls have taking that to a huge extreme. When I see what some girls are wearing these days its almost sickening. I think that women should dress lady like and yet they can still show their feminine side. I think that the media has played a huge role in how the clothing styles of even little girls has changed. It could also be that I have grown up in a home where my dad would never let me walk out of the door dressed like some of the girls today dress.
In the article taking sides, I found that men and women do have a lot of different qualities. In the article it talked about how boys seem to be more aggressive and competitive. I found that very true, I can remember at recess all the girls would swing or walk around and talk while all the boys played football and soccer. I remember everyday after recess all the boys talking about who won and who scored how many points. I never really thought about the difference until I read this article to me it was how it always had been. Also the paragraph that talked about how women are the more nurturing ones I believe that is also very true. Girls always seem to be more interested in children and little babies. I thought that the article was very interesting and i found a lot of points that I believe with.

Blog Number One
My name is Emily , I am from a small town in Texas. I am a freshman at OU and majoring in Pre-Pharmacy. I love to watch sports my favorite is football. I like to watch TV some of my favorite shows are One Tree Hill and Gossip Girl. I love to listen to country music and Texas country music. I am taking Women's Studies because it is required for my major, also one of my friends recommended that I take it because she really liked it.
